European electricity does not have one price - it has one per bidding zone, set every afternoon in the day-ahead auction for each hour of the next day. Germany, the continent’s largest market, is the reference most traders watch, quoted in euros per megawatt-hour. The number above is its day-ahead average for the latest published day.

Prices move on the balance of demand and the cheapest available generation. When wind and solar are abundant, prices fall - sometimes below zero; when renewables drop and gas has to fill the gap, the marginal cost of gas plus carbon sets the price. French nuclear availability, hydro in the Nordics, and how much power can flow across borders all pull neighbouring zones together or apart.

Rivex tracks day-ahead prices across all 32 ENTSO-E zones, with load, generation mix, cross-border flows and the clean spark spread that ties power back to gas and carbon.

Frequently asked

What are European power prices?
European electricity is traded in day-ahead auctions across 30-plus bidding zones. Each afternoon, buyers and sellers submit bids for every hour of the next day and a single clearing price is set per zone. The figure above is the German day-ahead average - Germany is Europe’s largest power market and a bellwether for the continent - in euros per megawatt-hour.
What is a day-ahead electricity price?
It is the price set in the day-ahead auction (via ENTSO-E / the power exchanges) for electricity delivered in each hour of the following day. It is the reference price most European power contracts and hedges are built around, distinct from intraday and balancing prices that fine-tune supply closer to real time.
Why do power prices differ between countries?
Each bidding zone has its own generation mix, demand and limited interconnection to its neighbours. A windy day in Germany, low French nuclear availability, or a constrained cross-border cable can push neighbouring zones far apart. Rivex tracks all 32 zones plus the flows between them.
